○ Nolan is born to Danny Rayburn and Evangeline (Eve) Radosevich. Sally and Robert Rayburn attempt to sway Evangeline to get an abortion. She chooses to keep the baby. Eventually, Robert and Eve come to an agreement: he will pay her $5,000/month to support Nolan if both of them stay away from the family.
○ Nolan grows up with a rocky childhood; his parents fight constantly, neither of them are financially or emotionally stable. As a teenager, he's in an out of youth shelters. Both of his parents are flighty, and as a result his living at home is off/on and before reaching adulthood, he's more or less independent and taking care of himself.
○ Danny opens a restaurant in Miami, and despite his frequent parental failings, Nolan decides to give Danny a chance again. He gets swept up in the idea of becoming Danny's sous chef and learning to cook and everything from him. It feels like everything is turning around, but Danny owes people a lot of money and that puts a damper on things.
○ Nolan meets Robert Rayburn for the first time with Danny over lunch. Danny tells him to go wait in the car, and once he's gone, Danny asks his father for money for the restaurant. Robert makes him choose between the restaurant or continued support for Nolan. Danny chooses the latter. Nolan finds out about this months later when he overhears his mother talking to Sally.
○ Danny robs a drug store and resorts to selling pills on the street to keep from going under. Nolan's disappointed when he finds out about this. After Danny gets arrested, Nolan visits him in jail and confronts him about why he didn't ask his parents for help, what about the restaurant, his becoming Danny's sous chef, and other things. Danny tells him to stay away from the Rayburns, that he lied, to "stay the fuck away from him." Following this, Nolan sets the restaurant on fire, thinking that the insurance would reimburse and it would cover the costs that Danny owed. Unfortunately, it was confirmed arson, so nothing was gained from it and the loss of the restaurant devastated Danny. Because of this, and later learning how badly it affected Danny, Nolan blames himself for his father's death.
○ Nolan sees his father alive one last time when he sets off to Islamorada. Danny gives him a key to his apartment and starts sending money there for Nolan. The money stops coming abruptly, Nolan finds out his father is dead, and travels down to Islamorada from Miami to find out what happened.
○ As Nolan meets members of the Rayburn family, he is met with distrust and reluctance; he's far too much like Danny and that's all anyone sees. His uncles and aunt don't ever truly accept him, despite living with John for a brief period of time and working for Kevin briefly as well. The only family members who really give a shit about him are the end of the day are his cousin Janey and Sally (and that is sometimes tenuous as well.)
○ Meanwhile, Nolan tries to find out what happened to his dad and learn more about him. The conclusions he'd come to before arriving in Islamorada and after are challenged as he interacts with others and talks to them about Danny.
○ He helps Eric O'Bannon and Ozzy Delvecchio with various errands and trying to find out what he can from John. Nolan is quickly aware that John is lying to him. He eventually meets Chelsea O'Bannon as well.
○ At some point, Nolan decides to peace out, head north and take care of things. In the months following, he ends up working at a horse stables/ranch. Janey skips school to spend the day with him, but prior to that they were keeping in touch via text.
○ Nolan tries to give Chelsea a check to help Eric, as he's currently in jail and the death of Marco Diaz has been pinned on him. He wants to help, and thinks he can, since he has an in with the Rayburns. Because he blames himself for Danny's death, he tries fixing things even though there's only so much he can do, and only so much that others will let him do. He also gets Chelsea in touch with Beth, a friend of Danny's in Miami who bailed him out of jail in the past. Both of the women try to look out for him and keep him from getting involved, but he's stubborn.
○ He tries to pass the check off to Sally to repay her for his mother stealing from her, but she won't accept it. The two have a heart-to-heart. Nolan expresses missing out on being around with the family, since everything was already so fucked up by the time he got there.
○ He proceeds to be under-utilized for the entire rest of the season. His purpose finding out the truth is even consistent in the entire episode that takes place in John's head, though.
○ Ozzy's changed in a crazy way and "sees things." One day, Nolan asks if he's seen anything, has anything to offer for guidance about what he should do with his family, with Sally. Ozzy's got nothing, and later on ends up committing suicide. There's no info about how anyone reacts to it, but really, the writing for season three is just so goddamn awful.
○ Other interactions with Sally are complicated. They have a confrontation about what it means to be a Rayburn, because how fucking dare he be "friendly" with Chelsea O'Bannon. When he asks her directly about what happened (re: Danny's death, Marco's death, Kevin's involvement, etc) she deflects and is very aware of that. Following this she has Nolan drive her to a clinic and he assumes it's some sort of sympathy play but her intentions are really never clear here. She later questions him about what he would do if he had money (buy a house, get a dog, go to school), and gives him a family heirloom. He accepts it after deliberation.
○ After a conversation with Beth in front of the inn, Nolan waffles over whether or not he really wants to know the truth about what happened to his father. Once he knows, there's no going back. Finally he decides that regardless of whatever John tells him, he's going to listen to it, leave, and never return.
note: the end of the series is left up to interpretation, but it's plausible that after everything that happens in this season, John tells Nolan the truth about Danny's death, and that is what I'm going with.
Incentive: Nolan's incentive is two-fold: first and foremost, he wants justice for his dad. The knowledge that John killed his father and got away with it is bound to eat at him, and he would want something to be done about it. Secondly, he's gotten the short-end of the stick his entire life. He would like to have assistance in getting himself on his feet and financially stable enough that he doesn't have to go down the path his father did. Specifically, he'd like to go to school for some kind of marketable degree, and get a job in Piraeus that pays enough that he can save it (and exchange it to USD when he leaves.)
Threat Level: Low-Medium. When it comes down to it, Nolan is a good kid with a good heart. He's not violent and would not pose any problem in regard to consent laws. However, he has grown up around crime, committed arson, and has engaged in other illegal activities including theft. He's not been caught or suspected of anything. However, and while it may be easy for him to get pulled down that path with the wrong influences, if he's able to support himself decently enough it won't be a temptation.
